CNCF releases special edition of Journal

Thursday, December 4, 2003

The release of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation's (CNCF) Journal, called Foundation, took place at the Harquail Theatre on Friday, 28 November.

This edition is a special double issue, in order to celebrate the Cayman Islands' Quincentennial year, and has been assisted by funds from the Quincentennial Celebrations Project

Henry Muttoo, the CNCF Artistic Director, and editor of the journal, said: "It covers culture in its broadest sense, meaning not just the arts, but the way people live."

The Journal exhibits a rich variety of work. It includes many colour photographs and articles about the performing arts such as dance, as well as visual arts, such as paintings.

Also included are selections of poetry and other creative writing, as well as work of a more academic nature, such as a paper by Professor Rex Nettleford concerning the role of the arts in a multicultural society.

The evening's events were halted for a minute's silence in honour of the memory of Miss Gladwyn Bush, popularly known as Miss Lassie, the visionary artist who died the previous Monday.

There then followed some short speeches by representatives of those supporting the journal, including Timothy Adam, CEO of Cable and Wireless, Angela Martins, Executive Director of the Quincentennial Celebrations Project, and Henry Muttoo, Artistic Director of the CNCF and editor of Foundation Journal.

The evening continued with readings from the Journal by some of its contributors, Nicola Kremer, Clive Christian, and Charles D Bush, who read a moving piece about the identity of a girl born to a slave, set at the end of the slavery era.
