SISTER ISLANDS REPORT
Busy time for Brac branch of the Cayman Islands Humane Society
Wednesday, December 10, 2003
It is not uncommon for the Brac branch of the Cayman Islands Humane Society to run across situations where an animal is allowed to produce litter after litter. In these situations, the Brac branch intervenes when possible, taking the pet to the visiting vet for spaying or neutering. The animal is returned to its home after recovery.
By preventing another unwanted puppy or kitty litter, the branch has ensured that the cycle of suffering will not continue.
This is only one of the many successes of the Brac branch, which is becoming an integral part of the community. In addition, there are many rescued animals that benefit from this organisation.
The branch, a collection of dedicated and pro-active volunteers, is committed to improving the conditions for animals and alleviating the pain and suffering of unwanted animals on the
Brac.
The organisation, originally the Sunshine Fund, was started by a handful of concerned residents headed by Karen Fraser. After a number of years of service to the island, the Cayman Islands Humane Society invited the small group to join forces with it. The support of the parent organisation has been instrumental to success on the
Brac.
The Brac Branch vision is to enhance the understanding of good animal care. Volunteers manage the spay/neuter program, give educational talks for school children and work towards the establishment of an animal shelter and boarding facility for the Brac.
The organisation's achievements are commendable. They include:
- More than 200 animals altered as a result of the promotional program for spaying and neutering.
- Heartworm tablets and 18lb bags of dry pet food dispensed monthly to elderly people households for their pets.
- Whenever it is needed, the Branch covers up to 50 percent of the fees for animal surgeries or injuries. Island Air has been generous in providing roundtrip transportation to Grand Cayman.
- This summer the Branch spearheaded the Pet Cadets, a program for school children volunteers to help the elderly with the care of their pets.
The Brac branch meets each month at the library in Stake Bay and welcomes volunteers. Call the Branch for more information at 948-2625.
Brac residents needing the assistance of this organisation may contact this number also. For those who wish to demonstrate their support for the efforts on the Brac, cheques may be sent to: Brac Branch CI Humane Society, P.O. Box 207 STB, Cayman
