Last call for flu shots as vaccine supplies run low: Director Public Health
Monday, December 15, 2003
The Director of Public Health is advising people to get flu shots as soon as possible because supplies are limited.
"If you have not already received your flu shot, you may have to rush as we have only a few doses left and no further supplies will be available for this season," said Dr Kiran Kumar.
While anyone can get the vaccine, people over 65 years of age, as well as anyone six months or older with certain chronic conditions, such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, renal problems, blood disorders and immune system problems, that are susceptible to complications of
influenza infection, are strongly recommended to have the vaccine.
No appointments are necessary. The vaccine costs CI$18.95 per person; however those who are exempt pay nothing.
The vaccine is available at the following locations:
- The General Practice Unit at the Cayman Islands Hospital, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Saturday.
- Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
- All District Health Centres from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Monday
to Friday.
- Little Cayman Clinic. Residents of Little Cayman should contact the clinic to make arrangements.
The flu vaccine is not recommended for individuals who are severely allergic to chicken, chicken eggs, chicken feathers or chicken dander; and those with diseases of the brain and nerves. People suffering from fevers may be vaccinated after recovery. Side effects of the vaccine include fever and body pains that may last up to two days. Panadol or similar medications will relieve the side effects.
