What a pity the year's finale is limited to five hundred people

Friday, January 2, 2004

Dear Sir,

We pause now to remember the wonderful celebrations for the Millennium. This celebration included representation from nearly every church and district. It was held at the Truman Bodden Sports Centre, a parade of hymns, other forms of music and fireworks were displayed.

Additionally, the Lord's Supper was conducted for all who desired to have participated. It was a magnificent display of togetherness.

Unfortunately, the Quincentennial Finale scheduled for 31 December, will be dampened by the limited provision of only 500 persons who will be charged CI$100 a person to sit under a tent!

Although others will be allowed to enter and witness the fireworks display etc after 10 pm for a reduced fee of $10, this stands in contrast to an estimated Island population of more than 40,000 people.

It is generally expected that celebrations be historically and socially correct. This was, however, not so when the drama at Pedro's Castle depicting the organizing of the first Government of these Islands in 1832 represented those participants as "pirates."

How unfortunate! This year's Quincentennial could demonstrate for all Caymanians a deepened sense of Peoplehood, a belonging together, a sense of unity, a continuing diaspora.
