Six of Cayman's young track and field stars spent a week before Christmas in Cuba using top class facilities and under the watchful eye of Cuba's world-class coaches.

"The Cuban coaches were very impressed with what they saw," said Director of Sport Dalton Watler. "All of the athletes needed that type of coaching to be able to interpret what type of athletes they are and to know where they are at in their development."

The stay at the high-performance centre from 16-21 December provided a big boost for the rising young stars, and Mr Watler is optimistic that three of them, high jumper Omar Wright, 400m hurdler Ronald Forbes and sprinter Rashad Seales will qualify for and acquit themselves well at the World Junior Championships in Italy later this year.

And there's another boost in store for the athletes because the Cuban athletes and coaches will be paying a return visit to Cayman next month. "That will give the coaches another chance to identify, select and diagnose their future ability and performance," said Mr Watler.
