Friday, January 9, 2004
Dos Visiones ('Two Visions') an exhibition of work by Caymanian photographer Patrick Broderick, and Cuban Photographer Roberto Salas, has been on display at the Royal Commonwealth Society in London.
The two photographers, both highly acclaimed and established in their respective homelands, swapped countries, Roberto Salas taking photographs in the Cayman Islands and Patrick Broderick in Cuba.
The resulting exhibition was shown in the Cayman Islands and also in Cuba. Now the exhibition has moved to London.
Leslie Bigelman, Director of the Cayman National Gallery said: "The concept of the exhibit is, we sent them to one another's countries to show us visually what each other's country is about, and that concept came about because we have a shared cultural heritage," Ms Bigelman explained
"Our islands are only separated by 130 miles, and our seamen used to be in the same waters that separate our countries to fish for turtle. It was a way to begin holding a dialogue on a cultural level between the two countries. Neither of us know very much about one another, so it was a way to begin."
According to Ms Bigelman, this is the first time that a Caymanian art exhibition has had such international exposure.
She said that she saw the exhibition in London was a showcase for Caymanian professionalism, "It made us as a country look good," she said.
