Kristen Smith, recipient of a 2000 Ministry of Tourism scholarship, recently graduated from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, where she was awarded an Upper Second Class Degree in Management and Tourism.
Ms Smith, the daughter of Dr Gerald Carlson and Jennifer Smith, was awarded a three-year partial scholarship, enabling her to attend university after returning from two years of study at Trinity College in Canada.
Having now completed her Bachelors degree, Ms Smith has been offered numerous jobs in the UK from renowned establishments such as the Caribbean Tourism Organisation Office in London. Ms Smith has however chosen to work with the Surrey Heath Council where she is currently enrolled in a training programme specifically aimed at guiding students intending to pursue a post-graduate degree.
Ms Smith plans on continuing her studies this coming September 2004 by pursuing a Masters Degree in Tourism Planning. She also plans to work abroad for at least a year to "broaden her experience before returning to work in the Cayman Islands."
Director of Tourism, Lania Rittenhouse commented: "The Ministry of Tourism has provided young Caymanians, such as Kristen, the opportunity to pursue their studies in the field of tourism.
"The Hon McKeeva Bush, Minister of Tourism, is very committed to higher education and will continue to provide eligible Caymanians with similar opportunities whenever possible.
"The 2004 Ministry of Tourism scholarship applications will be available in late February and we look forward to providing the new class of Caymanian youth with the opportunity to attend university in the coming year."
