Cultural Foundation recognises local achievers across the spectrum of the arts

The Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF) 13th Annual Arts and Cultural Awards Gala took place at the Harquail Theatre last Thursday.

Mary Rodrigues, CNCF Deputy Chairperson, began the evening by outlining the scope of the awards: "The award recipients tonight will be recognised for work in such areas as acting, literary achievement, dance, art education, music, playwriting, jewellery making sculpture, filmmaking and thatching… the range and variety, I hope you'll agree, is impressive."

HE the Governor, Bruce Dinwiddy, and his wife, Emma, who were visiting the event, said, "It's a great pleasure to be here for the Awards Gala… It's marvellous to get people of all ages together, and to have a joint appreciation of the wonderful arts and cultural things that are going on here."

Eziethamae Bodden, a volunteer helper for performing arts events on the island, was one of the recipients of the 'Appreciation Award.' 

"I was totally shocked when they told me I was one of the recipients of an award, and I appreciate it," she said. 

"It's just a wonderful feeling to be recognised among so many wonderful people." 

Artistic Endeavour awards went to Cynthia Arie and Vanessa Hansen for acting, Gabreille Wheaton and Randy Chollette (painting), Jessica Eden and Susan Barnes (dance), Nicholas Johnson (music), and Stephen Pickering (playwriting). 

Awards for 'Artistic Achievement' went to Melvin Augustine (music), Curtis Barnett (poetry and prose), David Bridgeman, John Broad and Mark Frazer (art and art education), Mitzi Callan-Gray (Jewellery) and Frances McConvey (music education). 

Awards for 'Artistic Excellence' went to the Cayman Drama Society (theatre), Leonard Dilbert (poetry), Horacio Esteban (sculpture), Frank Flowers (filmmaking), Lorna Reid (dance and dance education), Harold Tipton (technical theatre), and Donna Tull-Cox (playwriting). 

The Award for Cultural Heritage went to Coleen Gibson (thatching), Septimore Scott (music) and Valda Watson (thatching).

The Cultural Heritage lifetime Achievement went to Stephanie Williams.

The Appreciation Award, for outstanding support of the arts through volunteering, sponsorship, donations, went to Eziethamae Bodden, Sharon Marie Martin, and Angela Martins.
