McCoy Prize exhibit set for May

Tuesday, February 17, 2004

The Cayman Islands National Museum and the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands are inviting Caymanian artists to submit two pieces of artwork, in any medium, to be entered into their third annual McCoy Prize Contest.

The McCoy Prize, sponsored by the McCoy Family of North Side, was created "to encourage and reward excellence in Caymanian-produced art," explained the prize's creator Harris McCoy.

"It will be awarded to one Caymanian artist, craftsperson, and now photographer, each year whose work shows substantial improvement due to commitment and education."

All submitted works will be on display in the National Museum, and the winner of the McCoy Prize will receive $1,500 towards an art educational programme.

The prize-winner will be asked to donate their winning work of art to the National Museum for the McCoy Collection, the first pure collection of Caymanian art, judged, collected and owned by the people of the Cayman Islands.

Anita Ebanks, Director of the National Museum, said: "The National Museum, which seeks always to cultivate pride in and celebrate Caymanian cultural heritage, is delighted to participate in the McCoy Prize.

"This is another door of opportunity for Caymanians committed to developing their talents so they can more fully express themselves artistically."

Co-Curator Natalie Coleman of the National Gallery echoed the Museum Director's sentiments: "The National Gallery's mission is to promote and encourage the practice of visual art within our islands.

"The McCoy Prize provides an excellent opportunity for artists, of all levels of experience, to display their work in professional surroundings and to be encouraged by their contemporaries."

Harris McCoy confirmed that his family was delighted to be a part of such a worthwhile project. "This undertaking continues the tradition started by my grandparents some 80 years ago of supporting Caymanian artisans," he said.

"It is my hope that this prize will create a continued support in the community for things Caymanian, and instill pride and deserved respect for the talents of Caymanian artists."

The exhibition will take place at the National Museum in May. Applicants are asked to contact the National Museum, 949-8368 or the National Gallery, 945-8111, for entry forms and additional information.
