Zoë's abstract paintings go on show

Tuesday, February 24, 2004

The National Gallery and Grand Old House are presenting Azure Dreams a solo show featuring the abstract paintings of Zoë Blount.

Zoë's paintings are inspired by the richness and beauty in landscape and the strength and vitality of the sea; a country walk, cycle ride, snorkelling, water-skiing, and even music, constantly influence her use of colour, brushwork and texture. Seduced by rich hues, whites and blues, silvery greys, lavish cobalts and ultramarines, fresh turquoises, aquas and greens, the viewer enters another world, a dreamlike landscape, seascape or exotic underwater experience. Feelings of adventure and freedom are evoked through spontaneous and lively use of paint.

The exhibition features a selection of recent paintings inspired by Zoë's travels in Canada, living in England and her recent move to Grand Cayman. Several of them are influenced by snorkelling at Smith Cove and visiting the beach at Sandy Cay; one of her favourite places to observe changing weather patterns and the effect of light on the surface of the water at different times of day and night. These areas also offer inspiration in the plethora of shells, driftwood and sea glass washed up by stormy waves.

She is also working on a new series of paintings inspired by visits to Little Cayman, Cayman Brac and the butterfly farm, and she can't wait to start diving to experience the vast array of underwater sea life which will bring new colour, shape and texture to her work.

Azure Dreams (A Journey In Colour) opens at Grand Old House restaurant on 24 February at 6pm. For further information contact the National Gallery at 945 8111.
