Both Digicel and AT&T Wireless opened their telecommunications services on Cayman on Wednesday, 3 March.
Waiting in line outside the AT&T shop in Galleria Plaza, George Town, was one of AT&T's prospective customers, Sanya Moya.
"We want a better and cheaper rate than Cable and Wireless," Ms Moya said. "I don't know if it will be cheaper that Digicel, but we're here to compare prices."
Lucy Tibbetts, Sales and Marketing Manager for AT&T Wireless, explained what she saw as AT&T's strengths: "'Roaming' is one of our biggest advantages. You can receive calls in the US and Canada for 49 cents a minute, that is something I think it is very difficult to beat."
Another advantage on offer, according to Ms Tibbetts, was the low price of getting set up with a pre-paid phone package. "You can buy a Nokia phone for $89, with a free starter-pack that is going to give you $25 worth of talk-time," she said.
Meanwhile, at one of the Digicel outlets at Kirk Office Equipment in George Town, John Buckley, Chief Executive Officer of Digicel explained what he said were Digicel's main advantages: "We'll offer fantastic network coverage, 99 per cent population coverage around all three islands, we'll offer fantastic customer service, available 24 hours a day… and finally, we'll ensure that we have a wide range of hand-sets at incredibly competitive prices.
"In addition to that, we have incredibly competitive rates, for example, we have international rates now as low as 25 cents per minute," he said.
