Vanessa will be voice of the Olympics
Tuesday, March 9, 2004
Local fans of the Olympic Games may do a double-take this summer when watching the action in Athens. While they are viewing performances from Cydonie Mothersill and Kareem Streete-Thompson at the track, or Andrew MacKay in the pool, they may also be watching and listening to CITN's Vanessa Hansen.
Ms Hansen has been selected by the Caribbean Broadcasters Union (CBU) and Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) to be an accredited reporter/sportscaster for the Athens Olympic Games.
This prestigious selection allows her to be one of the few reporting via affiliated Caribbean television networks on selected Olympic events, and especially those that feature Caribbean athletes.
The CBU/CMC selection will allow for her to obtain valuable media credentials and will also cover her expenses.
Vanessa commented: "I was determined to find a way to get to cover these Olympic Games. This is the first time we have three qualified athletes for the Olympics and has the potential to be something special for Cayman.
"The original deadline to obtain media accreditation was missed and so I scrambled to find as many other alternatives as possible.
"I submitted an application to CBU/ CMC along with videotape profiling some of my work. In fact, I had suggested that I could be a cameraperson or take a lesser role to be part of the CBU/CMC team to ensure that we could get coverage of Cayman's own athletes.
"The opportunity to be awarded the reporter assignment for the Olympics is a dream come true," she said.
The Caribbean Broadcasters Union represents both public and private broadcast networks within the region and together with the Caribbean Media Corporation they are the premier providers, of news and information from the English Caribbean. Both companies are based in St Michael, Barbados.
