Three former John Gray High School students, Stacey-Ann Kelly, Jeremy Parsons and Luana C Look Loy, recently received degrees for their undergraduate studies on Education Council scholarships.

Stacey-Ann Kelly, daughter of Elaine Watler, became the Islands' first scholarship student to receive a First Class Honors Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the West Indies Mona campus, Jamaica.

She was awarded the degree for her studies in Media and Communications from the prestigious Caribbean Institute of Media and Communications (Carimac). She was also among the top five graduates nominated for Valedictorian in the class of 2003.

Ms Kelly, who specialised in Public Relations, aims to become an accredited master communicator and will be pursuing postgraduate qualifications in Corporate Communications.

"I believe my communication skills will allow me to have an impact where it counts as communication influences society's thoughts and values," she said.

Jeremy Parsons, son of Philip and Valerie Parsons, obtained his degree in electrical engineering from Florida Tech. He is currently working as a field engineer for Digicel.

Mr Parsons has his sights set on becoming a network engineer or a radio frequency engineer by attending training courses through the company.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my studies at Florida Tech, one of the best schools in my field," he said.

Luana C Look Loy, daughter of Dr Victor Look Loy and Director of Children and Family Services, Deanna Look Loy, received her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Ms Look Loy is currently doing her internship at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, Scotland. The year-long internship that started on 5 August 2003, will allow her to register with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.

Following the completion of her internship, Ms Look Loy will begin her postgraduate studies specialising in medicine and surgery.

She thanked the council for its generous support and said she hoped to return to the Islands in the next few years.

Education Council Secretary, Jennifer Smith, reminded students that the application deadline for overseas scholarships is 31 March. Application forms are available from the Education Council Secretariat at the Employment Services Centre, 945-3114.
