The Brac's Business and Professional Women's Club has named Barbara King as the Brac Woman of the Year. The celebration was held at the Heritage House in Cayman Brac on Saturday evening.

Her nomination came from the community at large and she was celebrated for her contributions to the community outside of employment.

Her association with Cayman Brac started with her arrival with her husband, Pastor Lee King as missionaries to the island. She originally comes from Alabama.

She spoke of the hardships of life in the Brac in the early days and though they didn't lack food, there was a void of vegetables in their diet. She remembered the kindness of locals in their sharing and giving.

The list of her community-minded efforts is many. Mrs King started the first nursing home, which became a model for the Pines in Grand Cayman.

While running four churches, Mrs King organised and provided lunches for eight-year-old school students. Her encouragement with the teenaged girls in the Brac gave them the incentive to participate in the Miss Cayman Contest.

While using her time outside of the home, her family always came first. She works side by side with her husband to realise their common dream of opening a youth centre for the island's younger generations.

She has diligently raised her children, and spoke with abiding love for her deceased handicapped son. From the tragedy of her loss she spoke of adopting another child in the home.

Her daughter Kate made special efforts to be on-hand for the ceremony for her mother and spoke of her devotion to their family.

Ms Claudette Upton began the ceremony with welcomes and presented the award to Mrs King.

Entertainment was provided throughout the ceremony. Spot Bay and Creek Primary School Music Group provided music on their instruments. Sybil Jackson sang So Far.

Georgia Isaacs and Jam Brac did a musical rendition of No Woman, No Cry. Carla French was the guest speaker for the evening and Georgia Isaacs ended the evening in song.
