A ground-breaking ceremony for extended facilities for Cayman Prep and High School, Smith Road, George Town, took place on Monday, 22 March.

The new two-storey building will house a modern computer lab, a science lab, an art room and additional facilities for music. The building work will last for an estimated 22 weeks, and will help to consolidate the primary school facilities.

School principal Jean Bahadur, said: "The primary school is to be located down here in it's entirety from September. We have more requests for places than we can accommodate, so this is one way to alleviate the shortage."

The beginning of the building work is the last stage in a long period of preparation and fund-raising. "We've been meeting every Monday for the past four years, and at long last we have managed to get the financing in place, with the help of the Church Council and Scotia Bank," said Ms. Bahadur.

Roy Bodden, Minister of Education, Human Resources and Culture said: "The ceremony this afternoon is an indication of the commitment of the government for a continuing supportive relationship with private schools in their educational venture."

Mr Bodden also spoke about the need to make sure that no school, whether in the private or public sector, should be left behind in facilities for education in information and communications technology.

"We have to prepare our students for the knowledge economy," he said.
Following the singing of the National Song, parents and teachers filed outside to witness the ground-breaking. Among those taking part were Bud Johnson, chairman of the Board of Governors, Bryan Bothwell, from the Church Council, and Mr Bodden.

Chris Phillips, who has two children at Cayman Prep and High School, said: "I think this is a wonderful thing. Parents before us have always strived to give us facilities that our children are enjoying, and I think it's our turn to step up to the plate and do this. We will have a first class facility here."
