In an effort to fend off crime in the Cayman Islands, Cable & Wireless recently donated five mobile telephones to Cayman Crime Stoppers for placement with residents without them.
As part of a pilot program, the phones will be given to residents of the Watlers Road area, some of which do not have phones in their houses and are therefore unable to call the police, Crime Stoppers or Neighbourhood Watch when they see or hear of criminal activity in their neighbourhood.
The idea for the phones came from Caymanian businessman Ellio Solomon who believes that such an initiative is one step towards maintaining the safety and wellbeing of the residents who live in that community and other similar areas throughout the Cayman Islands.
Mr Solomon, for his part, is no stranger to crime or tough neighbourhoods. "I've had the privilege of growing up in humble beginnings as well, so I know what it's like," he said, "I understand a lot of the needs in those communities, and I know a lot of the people.
"We want to try and get this in all the areas. We want it as far-reaching in the Cayman Islands as we can get it. We want to make sure people have access to phones so they can call Crime Stoppers and keep our country crime-free," he said.
Crime Stoppers Chairman, Ken Bryant said, "We are delighted to be able to empower the residents of Watlers Road to be able to participate in the Neighborhood Watch programme and have the ability to call the police or Crime Stoppers if they so desire.
"I would like to thank Cable & Wireless for their sense of community spirit and Ellio for his foresight and his efforts to make the Cayman Islands a safer place," he concluded.
