A donation by Rotary Central has brought John Gray Recyclers closer to their goal of raising funds for their trip to Fiji in July.

The group hopes to attend the opening ceremony of a kindergarten in a remote village in Fiji that it has been assisting.

Through the Seacology Foundation, John Gray Recyclers also has its very own coral reef preservation project in the Fiji Islands.

Working primarily through the Internet, the group has already won a Commonwealth Service Award in recognition of its efforts.

John Gray Recyclers will also be representing Seacology at the opening of another Kindergarten on the main island. Through the Seacology project the group will be an ambassador of the Cayman Islands representing Cayman’s Education, Environment and Tourism sector.

Co-ordinator of the group, Christine Whitehead said: “The group has been very involved in local environmental projects and the Fiji opportunity will enrich their experiences further. We are very grateful to Rotary Central for this assistance and hope that we can raise sufficient funds to make the trip a reality.”

Rotary Central’s Director of international services Paul Byles, said: “The fact that these students used their Commonwealth award to assist with building a school in a village more than 7,000 miles away is extraordinary”.

He added: “Going on the trip will also help them to better understand the global implications of the work they are already doing in the Cayman Islands.”

The project is receiving a lot of publicity in the Pacific and it is expected that it will be featured in magazines such as the Asia National Geographic Magazine and on American Television.

Anyone who wishes to assist the John Gray Recyclers with this international project can contact it by e-mail at johngrayrecyclers@hotmail.com or contact Mrs Whitehead on 949 9444.
