Names clarification over Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman
Thursday, April 15, 2004
Dear Sir,
Allow me to take the opportunity to introduce myself as the Vice President
and General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
After two-and-a-half decades of hospitality experience, I now have the
great pleasure of overseeing the successful opening and positioning of The
Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
The Ritz-Carlton upholds the finest level of standards for hospitality. We
are known for our service and facilities all throughout the world. Because of
our reputation, we uphold the highest regard in protecting the name, logo,
trademark and entities of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC.
As there is a distinction between the resort, The Residences, ownership and
developer – your recent articles have generalised “The Ritz-Carlton” to
incorporates all of them. That is not accurate and it conveys the wrong
impression to the public.
The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman nor The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC has
had any direct or indirect involvements with the recent events. Recent events
have been related to the owner and developer of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman
(of The Ritz-Carlton project).
I would like to clarify some of the language used for future articles and
ask for your assistance in compliance: (1). The proper name for the resort is
The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman or it can be referred to as The Ritz-Carlton;
but should never be shortened to “The Ritz” when written in an article,
advertisement, correspondence or headline. The Ritz is actually a separate and
unaffiliated company. (2). The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLc is the Corporate
Company of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
In addition, your publication has identified Melissa Perkins as the
spokesperson for The Ritz-Carlton. Melissa is the spokesperson for the owner
and developer.
This distinction becomes important as The Ritz-Carlton is growing with our
own team on this project. The only spokespeople for The Ritz-Carlton, Grand
Cayman are myself and Tracey Fentem,
The correct names and titles to be used for future articles are:
The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman:
Jean Cohen, Vice President and General Manager, The Ritz-Carlton, Grand
Cayman.
Tracey Fentem, Director of Sales and Marketing, The Ritz-Carlton, Grand
Cayman.
Developer and owner:
Michael Ryan, Owner and Developer, The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton,
Grand Cayman and The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman (The Ritz-Carlton project)
Melissa Perkins, Director of Marketing, The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton,
Grand Cayman and spokesperson for the Owner and Developer.
I bring these points to your attention because editions of your newspaper
made incorrect references and statements such as in an article on 4 March that
read “Though Ritz spokesperson Melissa Perkins said that the developers could
not comment on the situation...” and especially the most recent headline on 7
April that read ‘Ritz Sued Again” and “Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman sued again.”
The Ritz-Carlton takes great pride in protecting the name and reputation. I
hope you now have a better understanding of the proper verbiage that must be
used in your future articles. Because we guard our name, any deviation from
the aforementioned will result in immediate legal action.
Thank your for your attention and co-operation in this matter.
Jean Cohen,
Vice President and General Manager
The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman
