George Town Primary makes good progress
Monday, April 19, 2004
The Ministry of Education has issued a post-inspection summary report on its
visit to George Town Primary School, last October.
Inspectors commended the school on its effort, hard work and achievements,
concluding that the school had responded positively to the first inspection
report and had effectively used the inspection process and subsequent report to
support its own improvement and development processes.
“The school has given a great deal of attention to getting the
school-improvement processes right. A positive ethos has been maintained and a
culture exists across the school in which there is a strong commitment to
ensuring that all pupils achieve as well as can be expected,” the report stated.
Following the initial inspection, which took place in November 2000, the
school was asked to introduce effective measures for addressing aspects of
under-achievement in individual subjects and aspects of the curriculum such as
literacy and numeracy; clarify and strengthen the roles and responsibilities of
the senior management team, in relation to developing and monitoring the
curriculum; introduce effective measures to monitor and evaluate teaching and
learning.
It was also asked to ensure teaching styles provided more opportunities for
pupils to be actively involved in lessons, and to carry out investigations and
develop research and problem-solving skills; reduce the frequency of formal
testing of pupils’ achievement in the core subjects and to introduce efficient
and effective arrangements for assessing achievement in all subjects.
Post-inspection visits are short, follow-up inspections for schools that have
previously been inspected. A post-inspection visit does not attempt to cover all
the aspects addressed in a full inspection. The purpose of a post-inspection
visit is to assess and report on the progress made since the first inspection.
The school has made copies of the report available to parents. Other
interested parties can view the summary report on the Inspectorate’s web-site
www.ITALIC.ky.
Copies of all summary inspection reports are available to the general public,
for reference, at the following locations: the George Town public library; the
National Archive; the Resource Centre at the Education Department and the
Teachers’ Centre in Cayman Brac.
