The Cayman Islands hosted a visit from Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt of
Dominica, who arrived on Grand Cayman last Friday afternoon and stayed through
Wednesday.
Mr Skerritt, who is 31 years old, took office after former Dominica Prime
Minister Pierre Charles died of a heart attack on 6 January 2004. He is the
youngest person ever to hold the office of Prime Minister in the Caribbean.
Here primarily for rest and relaxation, Mr Skerritt met with several of
Cayman’s leaders on his stay. On Saturday night, he attended a welcoming
reception and barbeque at the Prospect home of George Town MLA Alden McLaughlin,
which was attended by approximately 70 people including Leader of the Opposition
Hon Kurt Tibbetts.
On Sunday, Mr Skerritt met with some 30 People’s Progressive Movement members
to discuss what McLaughlin described as “matters of mutual interest.”
During his stay, Mr Skerritt also met with HE the Governor Bruce Dinwiddy on
Monday, as well as Deputy Leader of Government Business, Hon Gilbert McLean and
Minister of Education, Human Resources and Culture, the Hon Roy Bodden.
Mr Skerritt first stayed at Morritt’s Tortuga Club in East End, and then
moved to the Grand Caymanian resort.
The visit was Mr Skerritt’s first to the Cayman Islands. “It is a wonderful
place,” he said, “though the topography is much different from Dominica’s.”
There was one big difference Mr Skerritt noticed between his country and
Cayman. “There is a lot more infrastructure here,” he said.
