East End youth have a Super Saturday
Tuesday, April 27, 2004
A new pilot youth programme, Super Saturday, is well underway in the East
End, with an increasing number of young people taking advantage of the new
activities, conducted every Saturday from 6-9 pm.
The meetings are held by the Department of Youth, Sports and Community
Development (DYSCD) and East End community care worker Delmira Kirchman Bodden,
along with volunteers including members of the Commonwealth Youth Club.
Held at the East End Civic Centre, the 12-week programme started in late
March and is geared towards older children and young adults from 10 to 25 years
old; however, younger children are also accommodated.
Super Saturday activities include basketball, dominoes, football, windball
cricket, netball, volleyball, board games, schoolyard games, movie night,
culinary art, arts and craft, and age-appropriate talks/information sharing on
major youth related issues.
DYSCD Deputy Director Katherine Whittaker, who is supervising the project,
said: “There has been notable community support, as adults from the district
help supervise and assist with snacks”.
Sponsors to date have included Foster’s Food Fair and The New Wholesome
Bakery.
Ms Whittaker added that the plan was for a district group to continue these
activities at the end of the 12 weeks. The programme would then move to other
districts.
It is envisaged that similar activities will also be offered on Cayman Brac
this summer.
The project is also supported by the National Youth Commission, fulfilling
several objectives of the National Youth Policy, as well as Vision 2008: both
documents recognised the needs for increased strategies and positive outlets for
young people.
