Minister’s Ball kicks off Carnival weekend

Tuesday, May 4, 2004

The fast-approaching Cayman Carnival Batabano weekend of celebrations officially starts this Thursday with the pre-Batabano Minister’s Carnival Masquerade Fete at Pedro St James Castle.

Supported by the Department of Tourism, the all-inclusive evening of entertainment will include dining and dancing under the stars, a costume fashion parade, silent auctions, art exhibition, prize drawings and more.

Music will include steel pan, jazz, calypso and soca from local bands and a special headline performance from the 14-piece Trinidadian band Blue Ventures.

Government Ministers and MLAs will be attending the event including the Hon McKeeva Bush, Leader of Government Business.

Chair of the Cayman Carnival Committee, Donna Myrie, said: “I would like to thank the Minister for his support and the Ministry for their vision in supporting Cayman Carnival Batabano.

“This event is not just about fundraising. It is about enjoying ourselves, forgetting our troubles for just a minute, dancing to music and sharing in unity, as we join as one with our sponsors, supporters and masqueraders.”

Tables of 10 are being offered for a contribution of $600 or $60 per person, and can be purchased from Le Classique, Vicky Hew at Walkers on 949-0100, Melissa Wolfe on 916-8335, and Paula Roye at the Ministry of Tourism.

Following the Minister’s Carnival Mas Fete, Cayman Carnival Batabano officially begins this Friday night with the Soca Monarch Song Competition at the Historic Library Lot.

Headlining band Blue Ventures will perform alongside the local bands competing for the Soca Monarch title.

Competitions for Best Flag Crew and Best Soca DJ will also be taking place, with no registration charge for these additional contests.

The children’s parade begins from Pageant Beach at 2:30 pm, followed by the adult parade from Royal Palms at 3:30 pm.

Festivities are wrapped up on Sunday with the King of Hearts Poker Run at Royal Palms.
