Seven students studying English at the International College of the Cayman
Islands took a trip to Harquail Theatre, April 20, to hear Commonwealth Award
winning writer, Earl Lovelace.
The Trinidadian-born writer read one of his short stories, selections from
past novels and a piece from the novel on which he is working.
The students were assigned to write an account of their field trip. Jakelyne
Whyte declared the evening “unforgettable,” and Angela De found the readings
“interesting from a cultural standpoint.”
The group’s lone male, Al Bennett, called the writer “brilliant.”
Joanna Petersen, along with Al, appreciated the humour in the author’s
writing.
Gina Patino commented on the writer’s departure from standard English and
Cenia Conolly called her first trip to Harquail Theatre “marvellous.”
As a student who aspires to speak fluent English one day, Zulma Bodden
enjoyed the evening out with her classmates and their instructor, Linda
Appleqvist.
