Minister’s Masquerade fete launches Batabano

Cayman Carnival Batabano celebrations began with the Minister’s Carnival Masquerade Fete at Pedro St James Castle, on Thursday 6 May.

More than 200 guests enjoyed a meal and extensive entertainment including a fashion parade featuring carnival costumes, silent auctions and a variety of Caribbean music.

Headliners The Blue Ventures, performed to a packed dance floor. The spectacular 14-piece band from Trinidad played a heady mixture of soca, reggae and calypso.

Leader of Government Business, Hon McKeeva Bush, and Dr the Hon Frank McField, Minister for Community Services, Youth, Sports, and Gender Affairs attended the event and mixed with the guests and masqueraders.

“It’s a pleasure to be here to support the carnival efforts of Donna Myrie, and Batabano enthusiasts,” commented Dr McField.

Also among the guests were a number of representatives from Cable & Wireless, the title sponsor for this year’s celebrations.

Tim Adam, Chief Executive, spoke to the audience to explain why Cable & Wireless was committed to supporting the Cayman Carnival.

He said: “Cable and Wireless is part and parcel of the fabric of Cayman life and culture, and this event embraces so many of our customers’ and corporate values; innovation and enthusiasm for life.”

The crowd was treated to a special preview of costumes in advance of the street parades on Saturday.

Members of the Saschay Bon Mas Band showed off their different sections including Europa, The Mixx, Africana, Caymanas and Latina and the Saschay Bon Festival Queen, Shelliann Levy, displayed her stunning prize-winning costume.

“The evening was a great success and was very rewarding,” commented Donna Myrie, Chairman of the Batabano Committee.

“Guests were in high spirits as we opened Cayman Carnival Batabano 2004.

“It was an opportunity to mingle with friends, sponsors and supporters as we looked forward to a positive weekend of carnival celebrations.”
