Key Clubs recognized

All of Grand Cayman’s five Key Clubs were represented at the 66th annual District Convention recently held in Orlando, Florida, at the end of April.

Key Clubs, which are essentially junior service clubs modelled after their adult Kiwanis Clubs, are currently active at John Gray, George Hicks, Triple C, St Ignatius and Cayman Prep high schools.

The Clubs have their own Officers who are elected by the members. Offering excellent leadership training opportunities the clubs organise their own fundraising events and perform various service projects in the community,

This year’s convention themed, Key Club Saves the Day, had 47 members from Cayman participating and St Ignatius student, Kellie McGee, was installed as the new Lieutenant Governor with responsibility for all five Key Clubs in Cayman

Ms McGee said: “We all had fun at Convention, it was a terrific experience. “We had a blast with dances, banquets, talent shows and watching a hypnotist.”

Ms McGee succeeds Kadi Merren as Lieutenant Governor, who had set her goal for the Key Clubs in Cayman to be recognised at the District Convention.

“Our clubs worked hard and have received the recognition they deserved,” said Ms Merren.

This year, all five local Clubs brought home banner patches, including UNICEF Hero, Governor’s Citation, Governor’s Alliance, Secretary’s Award/Monthly Reporting Patch, Governor’s Project Day Patch and Early Bird Dues.

Special awards also went to: Samantha Doorman of Cayman Prep as Distinguished President; Kellie McGee as Distinguished Vice President; Ridhima Kapoor of St Ignatius as Distinguished Secretary, Distinguished Members from all five clubs and Governor’s Project Pins. In addition, George Hicks won the Single Service Award.

Chairman of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman and the advisor to the local Key Clubs, Roger Bodden, said: “This has been a banner year for Key Clubs in Cayman. They have all excelled in service to our community. We are proud of each and every one of them.”
