Letter to the Editor
Avoiding cruelty to all creatures is a human imperative
Wednesday, May 12, 2004
Dear Sir,
I say to your readers – please do not let this happen to your pet.
This fluffy, loving little brown dog was found strangled to death, in the
backyard of its owner, at 4:30 pm Wednesday, 5 May (a day during International
Pets Week) by a concerned pet loving citizen, and photos were taken.
The Agriculture Department and Police Department were immediately informed.
However, upon the police arrival, the dead dog had been removed for disposal
by its owner.
This
loving little dog had been tied in the hot sun (see photo) with no water and
no shade. It had got its rope tangled around a rock and had slowly, slowly,
wound itself around and around its rope until it strangled to death.
Can you imagine the pain and suffering this little dog went through, as
each breath got shorter and shorter and slowly died. The necessary procedures
were taken by the authorities on this matter and there is now a No Tolerancy
Policy on such neglect and cruelty.
The laws have been revised and put in place for animal cruelty. The fine
can now get you a penalty of CI$4,000 or one year in prison or both.
The owner of this dog told the police he found the dog dead hours before
and had left it in the same spot, in view of his other little dog, to bake in
the hot sun.
Please, if you see animal cruelty or abuse, report it to your nearest
police station and to the agriculture department at phone number 947-3090.
Remember, a dog is a man’s best friend, with unconditional love and will
never desert you once you take care of him.
Accidents can and do happen to pets but proper care and procedures can be
taken to avoid most of them.
A Concerned Pet Lover
