In a meeting at the Bodden Town Civic Centre on Wednesday night, 15-year Public Works Department veteran Mark Scotland was due to officially announce his candidacy to run for public office in the November general elections.

Bodden Town United Democratic Party (UDP) incumbent MLAs Hon Gilbert McLean and Hon Roy Bodden were also due to be at the meeting to announce that Mr Scotland would be their running mate in the upcoming elections.

Mr McLean stated that he welcomed Mr Scotland as a political candidate. “Mr Scotland brings knowledge of government and a wealth of institutional experience to political service, which, coupled with his professional, engineering background, make him well-suited and equipped for politics in these times,” he said. “Additionally, Mr Scotland’s consistent and dedicated service to the community through his involvement with building and managing football in the Islands for almost 20 years has already laid down a track record of service to different communities throughout the Islands, and especially to Bodden Town, that runs through the course of these years.”

Hon Roy Bodden stated that he was honoured to mentor and work along with someone of the calibre of Mr Scotland.

“I first knew Mark through football, and have known him for many years,” he said, “For many years, I identified in him qualities that transpose well into the public arena.”

An engineer since age 22, Mr Scotland achieved his BSc in Civil Engineering from University of Miami, his Certificate of Supervisory Management from Napier University and completed several other short training courses throughout his professional career, including one at the Caribbean Development Bank in Project Preparation and Management.

As head of the Public Works Roads Division, Mr Scotland was responsible for planning, design and construction of phases 1 and 2 of the Esterley Tibbetts Highway, phase one of the Linford Pierson Highway, the major island-wide road resurfacing programme and the works at major intersections.

Throughout his professional career, Mr Scotland has been well known through his membership on varying government committees such as the National Roads Plan Steering Committee, Storm Water Management Committee (Co-Chairman), Bodden Town Development Plan Review Committee (Deputy Chairman), Aggregate Advisory Committee and Steering Committee for Aggregate and Fill Study by CH2MHill.

No stranger to public life, Mr. Scotland’s service to the people and community of Bodden Town began in 1987 and has continued through until now with his work with youth through football. He has coached and managed the district’s youth football teams, spearheaded the implementation of development programmes, organised team activities including fundraisers and overseas trips for youth teams and established a strong Youth Football Programme for Bodden Town that includes after-school segments. Since 1998 he has organised the annual Bodden Town summer football camp for as many as 130 children.

Mr Scotland commented on his effort to represent the people of Bodden Town.

“I have a passionate interest to see the future positive growth and development of the district, our people, and the entire country, and I have a keen interest in young people and how we can encourage them to enhance their opportunities for positive advancement,” he said, “I have always been a dedicated, committed and hardworking person. My parents, grandparents, mentors and others have instilled in me other strong characteristics such as honesty, integrity and reliability. Over the years, I have demonstrated that I am a capable leader, and one who is willing and prepared to accept responsibility and accountability.”
