
Mark Scotland announces Bodden Town candidacy

In a meeting at the Bodden Town Civic Centre on Wednesday night, 15-year
Public Works Department veteran Mark Scotland was due to officially announce his
candidacy to run for public office in the November general elections.
Bodden Town United Democratic Party (UDP) incumbent MLAs Hon Gilbert McLean
and Hon Roy Bodden were also due to be at the meeting to announce that Mr
Scotland would be their running mate in the upcoming elections.
Mr McLean stated that he welcomed Mr Scotland as a political candidate. “Mr
Scotland brings knowledge of government and a wealth of institutional experience
to political service, which, coupled with his professional, engineering
background, make him well-suited and equipped for politics in these times,” he
said. “Additionally, Mr Scotland’s consistent and dedicated service to the
community through his involvement with building and managing football in the
Islands for almost 20 years has already laid down a track record of service to
different communities throughout the Islands, and especially to Bodden Town,
that runs through the course of these years.”
Hon Roy Bodden stated that he was honoured to mentor and work along with
someone of the calibre of Mr Scotland.
“I first knew Mark through football, and have known him for many years,” he
said, “For many years, I identified in him qualities that transpose well into
the public arena.”
An engineer since age 22, Mr Scotland achieved his BSc in Civil Engineering
from University of Miami, his Certificate of Supervisory Management from Napier
University and completed several other short training courses throughout his
professional career, including one at the Caribbean Development Bank in Project
Preparation and Management.
As head of the Public Works Roads Division, Mr Scotland was responsible for
planning, design and construction of phases 1 and 2 of the Esterley Tibbetts
Highway, phase one of the Linford Pierson Highway, the major island-wide road
resurfacing programme and the works at major intersections.
Throughout his professional career, Mr Scotland has been well known through
his membership on varying government committees such as the National Roads Plan
Steering Committee, Storm Water Management Committee (Co-Chairman), Bodden Town
Development Plan Review Committee (Deputy Chairman), Aggregate Advisory
Committee and Steering Committee for Aggregate and Fill Study by CH2MHill.
No stranger to public life, Mr. Scotland’s service to the people and
community of Bodden Town began in 1987 and has continued through until now with
his work with youth through football. He has coached and managed the district’s
youth football teams, spearheaded the implementation of development programmes,
organised team activities including fundraisers and overseas trips for youth
teams and established a strong Youth Football Programme for Bodden Town that
includes after-school segments. Since 1998 he has organised the annual Bodden
Town summer football camp for as many as 130 children.
Mr Scotland commented on his effort to represent the people of Bodden Town.
“I have a passionate interest to see the future positive growth and
development of the district, our people, and the entire country, and I have a
keen interest in young people and how we can encourage them to enhance their
opportunities for positive advancement,” he said, “I have always been a
dedicated, committed and hardworking person. My parents, grandparents, mentors
and others have instilled in me other strong characteristics such as honesty,
integrity and reliability. Over the years, I have demonstrated that I am a
capable leader, and one who is willing and prepared to accept responsibility and
accountability.”
