Matthew Glidden smashed 18 runs off the final over bowled by off-spinner Hakeem Bush, to lead Central district to a remarkable five-wicket victory over Western district in the Cayman Islands Cricket Association’s under-15 cricket competition at the West Bay playing field last Saturday.

With Central requiring 19 for victory off the final over, Glidden followed the instructions from the pavilion to perfection.

He struck two fours hustled a couple with his partner Deighton Parker and then hammered two more boundaries to complete a dramatic win.

Central actually needed five for victory off the final ball but the four proved adequate as it tied the scores with both teams reaching 133 off 25 overs.
Central earned the win having lost only five wickets to seven lost by Western district.

Glidden, who only started serious cricket training this year, struck eight fours in his undefeated innings of 41.

Ron Royer played a patient knock of 15 to help rebuild the innings after the early loss of Steven Shaw who was bowled by Joshua Ebanks in the opening over.

Delroy Sullivan hit a few lusty blows in a well calculated counter attack but when he was dismissed after scoring 19 that included a six and three fours, it appeared the task would be too great for Central. Glidden defied the odds.

When Western elected to bat after winning the toss opener Hakeem Bush provided the stability. His top score of 36 included six boundaries. Sullivan took two for 23 and Royer two for 15.

The under-15 tournament continues this weekend at the West Bay school on Saturday at 9 am.
