Champions John A Cumber (West Bay) opened the defence of their Cable &
Wireless Primary school cricket title with a resounding victory over Savannah
Primary in a first round match played at the West Bay playing field.
George Town Primary and Bodden Town also won their matches but West Bay took
the early opportunity to display their immense batting prowess.
West Bay scored 140 for five in 20 overs and then dismissed Savannah for 50
in 18.3 overs to win by 90 runs.
Rohan Alvaranga top scored for West Bay with an unbeaten 42 that included six
fours. He shared an unbroken 89-run sixth-wicket stand with Brennan Ebanks who
was not out on 29 when the innings ended.
Ebanks struck four boundaries. Opener Daniel Hydes (14) and middle order
batsman Jordan Bush (11) were the other main scorers. Todd Hurlston was the most
successful bowler for Savannah with two for five off five overs.
Savannah never looked like challenging the target. Justin Manderson led the
bowling effort for the champions with the impressive figures of three for five
in three overs.
George Town also started the season on a positive note. The 2003 silver
medallists defeated Red Bay by nine wickets at the Smith Road Oval.
Medium pacer Lamar Larmond and Ryan Graham evenly split six wickets to help
undermine Red Bay’s batting and dismiss them for 34 in 14.4 overs.
Larmond took three for three in 2.4 overs and Graham three for five in five
overs. Captain Andre Douglas chipped in with two for four in three overs.
Douglas and Jason Christian batted positively as George Town reached the
winning target in the fifth over for the loss of just one wicket.
Both batsmen used their feet well to get in line and displayed exceptional
judgement in running between the wickets.
Douglas was bowled by Brandon Murray for 14 but Christian and Dale Parker
took George Town to victory without any alarms.
In the other match played Bodden Town defeated St Ignatius Catholic by six
runs at Walker’s Road. Bodden Town scored 87 and then bowled Catholic out for
81.
