Cancer Society will host charity Red Dress Affair

Wednesday, May 19, 2004

The Cayman Islands Cancer Society has announced it will be holding its Red Dress Affair on Thursday, 20 May, beginning at 5:30 pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

The evening is billed as one of “health, education and fashion” and includes health screenings, exhibitions of different types of fitness programmes offered in Cayman, seminars by doctors affiliated with Baptist Hospital and a fashion show.

In addition there will be a silent auction with many items to be purchased and a cocktail reception hosted by Baptist Hospital.

There is no charge to attend, but the Society is asking that people make a donation to support the work of the organisation in the community.

The suggested donation is $25, but all donations will be accepted. All the funds received at this event will be used to support programmes including the quit smoking programme, the voucher programme and financial aid to cancer patients.

The first part of the evening includes the cocktail reception, silent auction, exercise exhibitions by Cayman Physiotherapy and health screening by the Health Services Authority.

It will be offering blood pressure and glucose screenings and Progressive Distributors will offer body fat checks while Dr Stephen Pickering will perform lung function checks.

The silent auction features items including fitness and wellness activities from Fitness Connection and Cayman physiotherapy, jewellery from Island Companies, 24 K-Mon Jewellers and Sajen Jewellers, dinners from The Brasserie and Lighthouse restaurants and a special at-home dinner with wine from Mise En Place.

Other items include modeling classes from Elite Modeling Agency, crystal from Kirk Freeport, paintings from local artists David Bridgeman and Jan Hauteur and a CayWoman makeover. There will also be a door prize courtesy of American Airlines.

The second part of the evening features two seminars. The first will be by Dr Perez-Fernandez, who specialises in lung cancer and helping people quit smoking.

He will address the topic The Effects of Smoking – Can I Quit? The second presentation will focus on heart disease and is entitled The Heart Truth and will be given by Dr Peron, a cardiologist.

Before the start of the seminars, Mrs Emma Dinwiddy, patron of the Society, will officially open “the Affair” and a plaque will be presented to Dr Joe Ostroski for his for his many years of support and service to the Society.

The evening will conclude with a fashion show featuring models from Elite Modeling Service and a line of clothing by designer Betty Pol and the Fifty Rio Boutique of Key Biscayne, Florida.

As this is A Red Dress Affair the Cancer Society is inviting all attendees, both male and female, to show their support by wearing red to the event.
