Emma Dinwiddy, the wife of HE the Governor Bruce Bruce Dinwiddy, opened the First Annual Red Dress Affair sponsored by the Cayman Islands Cancer Society by sharing lines from her diary.

Reflecting on her first visit to the Cancer Society in October 2002, Mrs Dinwiddy wrote at the time: “We were very impressed by the work that has been done in the community and the work still being done.”

Held in the Regency Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the Red Dress Affair was an evening of education as Dr Javier Perez-Fernandez and Dr Eduardo Peron, both affiliated with Baptist Health South Florida, lectured and presented power-point presentations on the topics The Effects of Smoking – Can I Quit? and The Heart Truth.

Dr Perez-Fernandez noted: “Here in the Cayman Islands the number of teenage smokers has increased. This is cause for alarm.”

Both talks made the audience painfully aware of the health issues connected to smoking that women around the world now face.

Dr Peron praised the Cayman Islands for being the first country in the Caribbean to provide its citizens with the knowledge of the Heart Truth programme.

In an emotional tribute to Dr Joe Ostroski, Ms Hope Stephenson of the Cancer Society presented Dr Ostroski with a plaque, honouring his many years of support and service to the Society.

“Working with the Caymanian people over the years has been a pleasure for me. Their spirituality and love of other people made my practice easy.
“I often have to tell people bad news and I try to do that with compassion. The people of the Cayman Islands were always understanding and made my difficult work possible,” he said.

Prior to the events in the ballroom, there was a cocktail reception, silent auction, exercise exhibitions by Cayman Physiotherapy and health screenings by the Health Services Authority.

Progressive Distributors offered body fat checks and Dr Stephen Pickering performed lung function checks.

The night concluded with a fashion show which featured models from Elite Modeling Service and a line of clothing by designer Betty Pol and the Fifty Rio Boutique of Key Biscayne.

Dr Sook Yin, a Director on the Board of the Cancer Society was thrilled with the evening’s success, both in terms of relaying medical information and providing entertainment.

“We were very happy so many people made an effort to come out and support the event.

“We were pleased with the number of women and the smattering of men who attended.

“This shows people are definitely interested in this topic and type of evening. We look forward to hosting similar evenings,” she said.
