Parents in vote against school canteen building
Tuesday, May 25, 2004
Parents from Savannah Primary School have voted by an overwhelming majority
against constructing a new canteen during school hours, claiming that there
would be too much disruption to the school as well as the possibility of
emerging safety issues for students.
In attendance at the meeting were Minister for Education, the Hon Roy Bodden,
Chief Education Officer, Nyda Flatley as well as Public Works Department Project
Managers, Kevin MaGill and Nicholas Johnson, Principal, Lorna Blackman and staff
of the school.
Concerns raised included the fact that the Ministry, the Department and the
school had not been given adequate notice to prepare for the loss of the present
canteen which would be the construction site for the new facility.
Students would not have the facility available for early morning use and with
the start of the rainy season this would place the school in a difficult
position.
After canvassing the parents, PTA President, Mrs Creary, suggested that
building take place at night until the school was able to function without the
canteen during the day.
This could mean that construction might not continue during the day until 2
July when the school closed for the summer.
Other possibilities will continue to be explored, with collaboration between
the Education Department, the school and the PTA.
