A century opening stand between Ugal Sicard and Zitroy Robertson put
champions West Bay on the road to a comfortable 71 run win over Welly’s ICC,
when the Money Express division two cricket competition continued at the Smith
Road Oval on Saturday, 15 May.
West Bay scored 188 for nine off 40 overs and then dismissed Welly’s for 117
in 37.1 overs.
Welly’s had cause to regret five missed chances in the first 15 overs, most
of them offered by Sicard.
None were easy but Welly’s will certainly remember the old cricket adage
‘catches win matches’.
It is a problem that has plagued them all season. Ironically, these chances
apart, the fielding and catching of the Welly’s team was excellent. Chad Samaroo,
Horace Daley, Cohen Daley and the captain Harcourt Wason all took well judged
catches at crucial stages.
By then the openers had done the damage in a partnership of 107 that ended
when Sicard was well caught by Samaroo on the mid-wicket boundary off Perry
George for 61.
His innings included a six and three fours. Samaroo was quickly in action
again taking a smart catch at slip to get rid of Derek Williams off leg-spinner
Philip Hackett.
Hackett also removed Robertson, brilliantly caught by Cohen Daley running in
from deep mid-on.
Robertson struck three boundaries in his innings of 56.
West Bay continued to lose wickets steadily as they tried to accelerate the
scoring. Welly’s did well to take nine wickets for 81 runs after the excellent
start by West Bay.
Hackett finished with four for 39 while George took three for 37 from his
spell.
When Welly’s replied they never recovered from the early loss of Ken Hall.
Benjie Maynard made 31 and George 30 but the scoring rate was always well behind
what was required.
Sicard made one of the most crucial strikes by bowling Horace Daley for 12
while Williams removed another major threat when he bowled Wason for only five.
Fast bowler Sydney Moore was the most successful bowler with three for 20.
Williams took two for 27 and left arm spinner Edel Harris two for 21.
In the division two match played at the Jimmy Powell Oval on the same day,
Cable and Wireless Schools defeated Greenies by 99 runs.
Schools scored 187 for eight in 40 overs. Joseph Kirkconnell made 52 and
Ronald Ebanks 24. Tim Hepburn took two for 31.
Greenies fell for 88 in 20.3 overs with Tim Bridges scoring 37. Ronald Ebanks
took five for 15, Vincent Ebanks two for 23 and Omar Willis two for 25.
