Pilar Bush Stays

Pilar Bush
Wednesday, May 26, 2004
Acting Director of Tourism, Pilar Bush, has withdrawn her resignation from
the post, according to the Minster of Tourism and Leader of Government Business,
the Hon McKeeva Bush.
On 12 May, Ms Bush issued a statement confirming she had resigned. Sources
close to Ms Bush said that she did not agree with certain aspects of the process
of finding a permanent replacement for departed Director of Tourism Lania
Rittenhouse.
Information received by Cayman Net News revealed that Mr Bush intervened over
the selection of another person to fill the top Department of Tourism position
with a non-Caymanian individual who was reported to have an extensive background
in the cruise tourism industry.
Interviews for Director of Tourism post were scheduled to take place last
Friday.
“I was disappointed to learn of Ms Bush’s resignation but could not directly
do anything about it. However, when I received the recommendation that we allow
Ms. Bush to depart and bring in someone else from outside as the Director of
Tourism, especially someone from the cruise industry, I immediately appealed to
the Governor for his intervention as head of the Civil Service,” said Mr Bush.
“I am happy with and extremely grateful for His Excellency Mr Bruce
Dinwiddy’s decision to defer his acceptance of Ms Bush’s resignation while
having her continue to serve as Acting Director. The Governor clearly made the
best decision for the tourism industry and the Cayman Islands, and for that, my
colleagues and I are sincerely grateful,” Mr Bush concluded.
Last week, in an exclusive interview with Cayman Net News, Mr Bush said he
remained hopeful that Ms Bush would reconsider her resignation. “I think Pilar
is good for tourism,” he said. “I would like to see her as Director of Tourism.”
Mr Bush indicated during the interview that his first preference in filling
the Director of Tourism post was in finding a Caymanian capable of filling the
role. Most tourism industry professionals felt that Ms Bush is the most talented
and suitable Caymanian in the running for the job.
