Effective parenting in a defective world is possible

Speaker Mike Garrett informs parents about how to
bring up children according to bible principles

Friday, May 28, 2004

The Private Schools Association organised a one-day parenting seminar on Saturday, 22 May, at the First Baptist Church in George Town.

More than 80 parents registered for the seminar, that was designed to help Christian parents to bring up children in accordance with bible-based principles.

The seminar was conducted by Mike Garrett from North Carolina, an experienced counsellor, who took parents through the nine-stage programme, using a workbook called Effective Parenting in a Defective World.

Throughout the course, Garrett used God’s relationship with Christians as the pattern for the Christian parents’ relationship with their children.

Seminar co-ordinator Bettyann Mobley said: “I feel that this seminar is greatly needed in our community. We as parents need all the help, wisdom and direction we can get, to raise our children in this day.”

The stages covered included topics such as how to raise positive kids in a negative world, building relationships that bond, and how to develop a child’s full potential.

Mr Garrett stressed the importance of using a multi-faceted approach to parenting, by reinforcing good behaviour by encouragement.

“Anything you see that your children are good at doing, be sure to tell them,” and discourage bad behaviour by the use of suitable punishments. One of the principles is short-term pain for long-term gain,” he said.

Mr Garrett concluded by saying that children would inevitably experience failure at some time in their life.
