Voting registration deadline looms
Thursday, June 3, 2004
With elections only months away, almost 4,000 eligible voters still need to
register before the 1 July deadline, according to the Elections Office.
“We urge everyone with the right to vote, to take the time and get on the
Register of Electors so they can participate in the democratic process.
“It is vital for people to take an interest in their government as it
influences all areas of their lives,” said Supervisor of Elections Kearney
Gomez.
According to a United States study, the major reason people don’t register
and vote is that they don’t think it directly affects their everyday lives.
However, the study’s authors said, there were many good reasons to get involved
in the voting process:
- It is your money: The elected government decides how to spend taxes, set
import duties and other fees. Government policies and budget decisions will
affect you, your children and possibly even your grandchildren.
- It is your children’s education: Government’s decisions affect the
quality and cost of public schools and higher education.
- It is your job: Members of the Legislative Assembly will have a say in
many aspects of the work environment, including minimum wage, pay equity,
fair hiring practices, health insurance and pension security.
- It is your health care: Legislators’ decisions on health insurance laws
determine your access to health care.
- It is your infrastructure: Elected officials decide on the building and
upgrading of roads. Their decisions also affect the availability of
telecommunications and utilities as well as the price you pay for them.
- It is your air and water: Government decides how public land will be
used and sets environmental laws.
- It is your neighbourhood: Elected officials make daily decisions
regarding crime prevention, law enforcement, safe and affordable homes,
traffic patterns and where to locate schools.
- It is your democracy: You make it work.
