- A licensing law for contractors sounds like such a
good idea doesn't it? Who could object? What could go wrong? Well, let me
tell you. Any licensing law will be written by and for the Cayman
Contractors Association. The purpose of the law will really be to keep out
competition and keep "the good old boys" working. I had my home built by one
of "the good old boys" and it was not pleasant. The contract stated an April
finishing date and occupancy was not approved until November. Most of this
time my furniture sat in the middle of the rooms covered with tarps while
construction went on around it. Money was taken out of my bank account
without my permission. At a stage in construction, I asked for and received
in writing that all subs had been paid. I found out some months later that
the windows and the AC system hadn't been paid for by "the good old boy". To
this day I cannot get that AC company to my home for any service. I finally
had to fire the "good old boy" for breach of contract and find a second
contractor to finish the job. If I hadn't paid an architect firm handsomely
to oversee the construction I would have been out tens of thousands of
dollars and probably still looking for my home to be completed. If "the good
old boys" have their way and the licensing law is just to keep competition
out, the home owners will be the ones ending up on "Boot Hill". By the way,
the first contractor is still in business - Anon
- Generally speaking, having another government organization to examine
and accredit builders is just that... more government. There will always
people that think they can get something for nothing...you will never change
that... unless you think you can change the IQ of people. I am in the
process of building a house… I have obtained 3 builders. I have spoken to
the owners of the houses they have built and they are all happy with these
fellows’ work. I will do the same for the subs. In other words there will
always be shady characters in the building and other industries… the person
using these fellows have to do some homework... it’s not that hard. That way
they will avoid problems in the future. PS the same goes for medical second
opinions etc, etc. - Frank Pallares
