The Stingray Swim Club held its annual awards banquet last Sunday at the
Hyatt Regency Hotel with a record of 192 people attending including Minister of
Sport Dr the Hon Frank McField and his family.
The awards were chosen by the Stingray coaches mostly for work in training
and not necessarily based on swim meet results.
All of the award winners received etched glass frames with action shots of
themselves in a custom ‘magazine cover’ design.
The awards were broken into class categories for the swimmers and special
awards were given as well.
The recipients of the most improved award were Tomas Cairns in the Eagle Rays
class, Meghan Millward in the Manta Rays class, Andrew Smiley in the Nurse
Sharks class, Leon Elliot in the Makos class, Amy Smith in the Senior
Development class, and Meg Fisher-Wells in the Senior class.
Spirit awards in each division were also given and those recipients included,
Jacob Hawk in the Manta Rays division, Danielle Boothe in the Nurse Sharks
division, Alexa Robertson in the Makos division, Montana Robertson in the senior
development division.
Laura Elphinstone won the Coaches’ Award in the Senior Division.
Farewell gifts were also given to those who were going off to University,
Kaitlyn Elphinstone, Laura Stafford and Andrew MacKay.
New awards were also created by the Sting-ray Board, for the two Olympic
Qualifiers; Andrew MacKay and Shaun Fraser
The receiver of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Jim Fraser, who also won
the Volunteer Parent Award. Jim was the first president of Stingray Swimming
Club and held the position for 10 years.
