Dramatic increase in 2004 burglary figures
Thursday, June 24, 2004
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service has revealed that there has been an
11.7 percent increase in reported burglaries since last year.
Statistics released by the police force showed from January to the end of
April of this year, there were 210 burglaries, compared to 188 last year.
It was estimated by police that 176 were domestic burglaries, while just 34
involved commercial properties.
RCIP Crime Reduction Officer John LeCuirot said: “These figures could be
dramatically reduced if the residents had properly secured their premises.
“Seventy-four per cent of domestic burglaries were a result of premises being
left insecure, and the burglar did not have to break in to commit the crime. For
commercial burglaries 38 percent of properties were left insecure.”
He added: “The harder it is for the burglar to break into a residence, the
more likely it is they will leave clues behind which would lead to them being
apprehended.”
An RCIP information booklet entitled Be Safe, Be Secure is available for
householders and businesses, while valuable security advice is always available
from local RCIP Community Beat Officers.
Those with information regarding offenders or the sale of stolen property are
also asked to contact either the RCIP, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800
TIPS.
