Drama enthusiasts still have three opportunities to see the Cayman Drama
Society’s (CDS) production of Death of a Salesman, when it is performed this
Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 pm at the cosy Prospect Playhouse.
Rather depressing in nature because of its tale of the American dream gone
awry, Arthur Miller’s drama is the type of production rarely seen here in the
Cayman Islands because of the difficulties in producing such plays with amateur
actors. But the CDS pulls off Death of a Salesman fabulously, thanks to many
fine performances, particularly in the lead four roles.
Veteran Cayman actor Peter Kosa shines as Willy Loman, the misguided and
disillusioned salesman who never learns that the value of life is more than just
money and image.
Other fine performances are turned in by Sue Howe, as Willy’s wife Linda, and
Malcolm Ellis and Dan Morisseau, as Willy’s sons Biff and Happy respectively.
Death of a Salesman is the kind of drama that haunts viewers long after
they’ve left the theatre because, when looking at the mirror of the stage, many
might see less than flattering reflections of themselves.
The CDS should be commended for its efforts to bring a production of such
substance to the local stage; hopefully Cayman residents will seize the rare
opportunity to witness one of the true classics in American drama.
