KST Places 2nd in Prague Long Jump
Thursday, July 1, 2004
Kareem Streete-Thompson jumped 8.11m yesterday (Monday) at the Josef Odlazil
Memorial in Prague, Czech Republic to claim second place and equal the 7th best
jump in the world in 2004. Kareem finished behind Ignisious Gaisah (Ghana, World
#4) but bested Yago Lamela (Spain, World #6).
Kareem commented, “With all of my training and preparation for the 100M and
potentially 200m sprints in Athens, I needed to show a quality result in the
long jump. I’m still a little rusty in getting my steps down, and I actually
only made one legal jump, my last. However, jumping today (Tuesday) in Zagreb
and again this coming weekend in Bad Langensalza will give me an opportunity to
get some rhythm going. I’m very pleased with 8.11m and know that I am capable of
much more. I am even happier that I kept myself focused and tuned in at the very
last jump. I have to be able to produce a result under any circumstance and any
condition. This was a great experience to tuck away for Athens.”
Kareem won this event in 2003 but this year’s event featured a much higher
quality field, including the 2003 World Championships bronze medalist, Lamela.
“My long jump world ranking has slipped a little recently but this result and
the coming competitions should allow me to shore that up while I prepare myself
for Athens”, he noted. Kareem added, “In an Olympic year, the only result that
matters is the one in Athens.”
