Former NDC Head Arrested In Canada
Thursday, July 1, 2004
Former Cayman resident and coordinator of the National Drug Council of the
Cayman Islands (NDC) Peter Shoniker was arrested recently in Canada and charged
with a host of money-laundering offences, according to a report in the Toronto
Globe and Mail.
Mr Shoniker, who abruptly resigned the lead post of the NDC in February 2001
after a two-year term, was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in
Toronto as part of a lengthy sting operation along with Toronto jeweller Adeli
Tabrizi.
The two are charged with laundering $750,000 which was supplied by an
undercover police officer. Now a prominent attorney in Toronto, Mr Shoniker is
scheduled to appear in court on 22 July, and is out on $75,000 bond, posted by
his wife Renee Vinett.
