The State Opening of the 2004 Session of the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly (LA) took place last Friday morning marking the House’s return home to its Fort Street location.

After the Honourable Speaker of the House, Linford Pierson, opened the session, the Leader of Government Business Hon McKeeva Bush motioned for the suspension of the House in order to await the arrival of His Excellency the Governor, Bruce Dinwiddy, CMG.

Once the Governor arrived and the House rose to greet his arrival, Mr Dinwiddy went outside the building for an inspection of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Guard of Honour, and two Royal Salutes.

Back inside, Mr Bush presided over the Presentation of the Speaker’s Chair, which was designed and carved by local craftsman Horace Ingram and donated to the Legislature by the Bush family.

“The mahogany Speaker's Chair, that it is my honour to present to the people of the Cayman Islands today, has been built here in our country. It is a testament to the quality craftwork and attention to detail that can be accomplished in these Islands. But more than that - it is a demonstration of the resourcefulness and aptitude of our people.

“If I should say so, it is a magnificent piece of workmanship. It is a tribute to our people, our traditions and our history.”

He said; “I have been serving for twenty years now. I am the longest serving member and ‘Father of the House.’ I thought it would be a good way to mark this anniversary.”

After the Presentation of the Chair, the Speaker called on Mr Dinwiddy to deliver the Throne Speech.

Upon the conclusion of the Governor’s speech and his departure, the LA then deferred debate on the Throne Speech until next Wednesday 10 am.
