New radio station nearing its launch

Dave Martins

Tuesday, July 6, 2004

A new radio station will begin broadcasting in the Cayman Island within a matter of weeks when Panorama Productions Ltd, founded by Dave and Angela Martins, hits the airways at 96.5 FM.

Work on the station is now in high gear and the office and studio have already been set up at the Island Electronics Building, 90B Godfrey Nixon Way.

It is expected that studio equipment will be installed within the next week to 10 days and press advertising will begin from 2 July, to be followed by television commercials, the station’s owners have disclosed.

Promising a “stylish blend of popular music appealing to a wide cross-section of the population and a fresh approach to marketing to corporate customers and listeners,” the new station will also feature “non-musical items of Caymanian culture as part of its daily broadcasts.”

The station is geared to appeal to the 20-55 age group as its primary demographic.

Mr Martins, who is Creative Director for the station, said he will draw on over 40 years experience in the music and culture of the Caribbean, and over 20 years participating in these aspects of Cayman life, as well as his career stints as a journalist, composer and writer.

The station will also seek to draw on a growing interest in things local, which he said has intensified within the last 10 years.

“We are quite excited about this venture and we are having fun going into it,” noted Mr Martins. “Music is going to encompass a wide spectrum, our non-music programming will encompass local events and culture, and we will be showcasing local personalities on air.”

With this focus, the station expects to provide “a wider lens on Cayman than is presently being shown,” Mr Martins stated.

The station will feature Caribbean voices as its on-air personalities.

On the business side, the station’s owners expect to attract advertisers with its appealing mix of music and local flavour. “We have a clear interest in creating professional alliances with advertisers that will help to expand and support their brand development with their customers,” Mr Martins said, noting that already the interest from corporate Cayman is high.

Panorama Productions Ltd received its licence to operate from the Information and Communications Technology Authority (ICTA) on 3rd June.
