- Hats off to the volunteers of MattSafe and the
Road Safety organisations in getting the much needed amendments to our
Traffic Law. I think of Pat Ebanks, Robert Campbell, Aileen Samuels and
others who tirelessly researched road safety issues, particularly the
graduated driver’s license issue. The amendments that are being made to the
Traffic Law are a direct result of those individuals' research and lobbying
of Government officials. Believe me, it took a lot of hard work to bring
these much needed amendments to fruition.
I hereby nominate Pat Ebanks, Robert Campbell and Aileen Samuels for the
M.B.E. for their hard work and devoted service to the driving public of
these Cayman Islands. I know mothers of teens in Cayman will feel better
that something is being done to make it safer for their young drivers on
Cayman's roads.
Mr Bush, while you are making these amendments, please outlaw the sale and
placement of speed enhancers to cars. Also, make it an offence for an
insurer to insure a car with these speed enhancers. Put it in the Law that
any driver found with these speed enhancers on his car will automatically
lose his license. Also, any merchant found selling these speed enhancers
will automatically lose his Trade & Business License. Also, any insurance
company that insures a car with these speed enhancers will be fined a hefty
sum. Give the Traffic Law some teeth. Our young men are dying; put some
drastic penalties in the Law to prevent this.
Nice going Mr Bush, but I hope this is not window dressing amendments. I
hope you go the full distance and do the above, which will help alleviate
the terrible problem of road fatalities in Cayman.
The community should honour those above named volunteers who soldiered on to
champion their road safety cause so passionately. They are all volunteers,
with nothing to gain, except knowing they helped to make Cayman safer for us
all. Give them the MBE. I've seen lesser deserving people get it. Honour
them. They deserve it. Respect is due - Direct Current
- I welcome this latest news from Mr Bush. For years,
there have been those people in our society who have advocated these
amendments that Mr. Bush now deems pressing. MattSafe and the Road Safety
organisations have presented many recommendations to Government for a long
time now and have had no response.
While I welcome Mr. Bush's decision, I am not naive. I recognise this is a
shrewd political move four months before a crucial election. The victim is
from a large West Bay family. Go figure.
While Mr Bush may hope for political mileage from his decision to amend the
Traffic Law, I hope it is not a window dressing amendment. I sincerely hope
that he will take recommendations from those in our society who are familiar
with this problem and have researched it and have some brilliant proposals.
While he and the AG are turning their attention to the Traffic Law, I hope
they go the full distance and also outlaw the dangerous speed enhancers that
are being sold in Cayman. I trust they crack down on those merchants in our
country who sell dangerous cars and attachments to install on those cars to
enhance their speed. Our youth are being killed while some people get rich
by selling these speed coffins.
Kudos Mr. Bush. Better late than never. My sympathies to AJ's family. May
God help us all. - Observer
- I feel that this is a move in the right direction. We as Caymanians need to change this by reacting faster. We need to implement this immediately. We can utilise the driver programs by adding them to the school program by starting at age 14 to 15 until graduation. We need to start committing to these procedures and avoid straying away. Make changes now for the youth. Education is the key -
