The newly-appointed Chief Immigration Officer (CIO) Franz Manderson was admitted into the Cayman Islands Bar in a ceremony presided over by Justice Priya Levers last Friday morning.

The Grand Court was filled to capacity with spectators for the event.

During the ceremony, Mr Manderson, who took over as CIO on 12 July just five days after completing his articles at local law firm Walkers, thanked the many people in his life who helped him reach this personal accomplishment of completing his studies at Cayman Islands Law School.

Mr Manderson specifically mentioned Angus Foster, a Senior Partner at Walkers for moving for his admission to the Bar, Sara Collins and the rest of the Walkers staff.

“To the visionary leaders in Government his Excellency the Acting Governor Mr James Ryan, Acting Chief Secretary Mr Donovan Ebanks and Cabinet Secretary Mr Orrett Connor, who were the key supporters of my decision to pursue legal qualifications and to take a leave of absence to complete my Articles, I offer my sincere thanks for your support. My decision to continue my career in the civil service has been influenced greatly by your exemplary service to the people of the Cayman Islands,” he added.

Pointing out that he enjoyed the fortune of good women surrounding him throughout his life, Mr Manderson said: “I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by good women from day one. In fact I don’t believe that it is a coincidence that I am being admitted by the only Lady Judge in our Islands.” He proceeded to thank his mother, sister, wife, daughter Alyssa and son Franz.

In closing he shared poignant advice he learned along the way. “Finally, My Lady, Mr Grant Stein, a Senior Partner at Walkers, advised me many months ago that ‘the success of a jurisdiction is not determined by its laws and regulations but by the calibre of persons who enforce them’ I now look forward to being a contributor to the success of these beautiful Cayman Islands,” he said.
