Caymanian off to work in Hong Kong

Tuesday, August 3, 2004

Appleby Spurling Hunter Associate, Sailaja Alla, is moving to the firm’s Hong Kong office in mid-August.

Sailaja currently works in the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group, and has a broad practice encompassing international commercial law, company law, mutual funds, private equity investments and non-contentious intellectual property work.

Sailaja said: “It is a great opportunity from a professional as well as a personal point of view. I am flattered that the Partners asked me to take up the position in Hong Kong and I hope to exceed their expectations.”

As a Caymanian, Sailaja feels very strongly that Cayman is her home, and she cites the fusion of cultures as one of the main reasons that she loves it so much. However, she loves to travel the world, and has already lived in several countries.

Born in India, Sailaja has not lost touch with her Indian culture. At the age of five, she spent a year in Jamaica, where her father, Dr. Kiran Kumar Alla, was teaching at the University of the West Indies. The family then relocated to Cayman, and her father is now well-known as the Director of Public Health for the Cayman Islands.

After studying her Bachelors of Law (LLB) at the Cayman Islands Law School, Sailaja moved to England to obtain her Masters of Law (LLM) from the University of Sheffield. She then spent a year at the Inns of Court School of Law in Chancery Lane, London. During this time, she traveled throughout the UK and Europe.

“From what I understand, Hong Kong is a vibrant international centre and a beautiful place with a fascinating culture.

“I look forward to working with new clients, furthering my commercial experience and hope to return with amazing memories.”
