Miss Teen girls are poised for beauty event

Miss Teen contestants get set for the big day

Friday, August 6, 2004

The five contestants vying for the coveted title of Miss Teen Cayman Islands are currently undergoing a rigorous training schedule which includes stage training, grooming, etiquette, and public speaking classes.

Shakira Diaz, 15, and Deborah Robb, 16, both of Bodden Town, Evana Martinez, 17, and Iliana Del la Cruz, 16, from George Town, and Kristy Hurlston, 15, of West Bay, will all compete in the pageant which takes place at the Lions Centre on Saturday, 28 August.

Each will be hoping to win the title and the two-year scholarship.

Sponsored by Leo Club of Grand Cayman and Cable & Wireless, the 26th Annual Miss Teen Cayman Islands Pageant is keeping the competitors busy as they prepare for the various stages.

As well as rehearsals, photo shoots, make-up classes and public appearances, the young ladies are honing their personal talents for the show, and increasing their knowledge of the countries they will each represent during the pageant.

“The Miss Teen contestants are put through quite a labour-intensive training programme in preparation for the pageant,” explained Rosa McLean, President of the Leo Club of Grand Cayman.

“We try to give them as much exposure and experience as possible, and provide them with opportunities to develop their skills and talents, with the hope that they will go on to become future Miss Cayman Islands delegates, but more importantly, successful, contributing citizens to their respective communities and their country.”

Andrea Fa’amoe, C&W Corporate Communications Manager said: “Cable & Wireless is proud to be associated with the Miss Teen Cayman Islands Pageant, a programme which seeks to nurture both the internal and external beauty that is inherent within Cayman’s teenage girls.

“I would like to commend Deborah, Evana, Iliana, Shakira and Kristy for allowing themselves to be tested by this invaluable experience, and wish them the best of luck in the upcoming pageant.”

Cable & Wireless is sponsoring the event for the second time, and will be giving away phones throughout the pageant.
