Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Human Resources and
Culture, Joy Basdeo, tendered her letter of resignation to HE the Governor Bruce
Dinwiddy on 30 June, Cayman Net News has learned.
Mrs Basdeo’s resignation will take effect on 30 June 2005, at which time she
plans to retire. “I’ve worked for a very long time in a high-pressure position,
and I want to have time to devote to personal and family interests and enjoy my
retirement,” she said. “I’m going to concentrate on my children, grandchildren
and my writing.”
Although she was only required to give six month’s notice of her leaving
Civil Service, which she has worked in since January 1973, Mrs Basdeo gave a
full year. “I wanted people to know that I haven’t done this lightly and that
there is no political reason for my leaving,” she said, adding that she has
enjoyed her time as Permanent Secretary immensely.
Mrs Basdeo said she would miss her colleagues at the Ministry: “I think we
have the best Ministry.”
Minister for the portfolio, Hon Roy Bodden, spoke glowingly about Mrs Basdeo.
“She has an inimitable style about her and she is very respected wherever we
go,” he said. “Even in the deepest crisis, she has a calm about her.”
Mr Bodden said he would miss Mrs Basdeo. “She is knowledgeable, willing and
able. She gives me good advice. It will be a serious loss to the Civil Service
and to the Ministry when she leaves.”
