Candidacy announced by George R. Ebanks

Wednesday, August 11, 2004

George R Ebanks has been proposed and seconded in his candidacy as the declared People’s Progressive Movement candidate for Bodden Town.

Mr Ebanks was proposed and seconded by six Bodden Town PPM members: Hubert L Bodden; Oscar Moxam; Anarelys Moxam; his wife, Carol T Ebanks, and his parents Phillip W Ebanks and Vinnette Ebanks.
Being proposed by Hubert L Bodden was especially significant, said Mr Bodden.

He added: “Everybody in this community knows the outstanding role he has played in this district in representing his community. He is especially concerned about the new community and the lack of consultation for voters.

“The fact that he is willing to put his trust in me shows that I can truly represent his concerns and community in Parliament.”

The secret ballot to determine the candidate will be held at Bodden Town Civic Centre on the 19 August at 7:30 pm.

Treasurer for GM International, an offshore branch of the world’s largest car company Mr Ebanks describes himself as a “Bodden Towner and a fighter for the people of the Cayman Islands.”

Mr Ebanks has been a candidate in two previous elections, the last being the by-elections in 1995 when he was unsuccessful

Mr Ebanks said: “Like President Abraham Lincoln and Dr Martin Luther King Jr, I too have a dream. I have a dream that one day the people would afford me an opportunity to represent them in parliament; to be their voice in Government.”

If he gains office, Mr Ebanks hopes to pursue a number of local issues, primarily that of housing development.

He said: “Local people are complaining on a daily basis about developers who are not fulfilling their legal obligations to provide proper infrastructure.

“As soon as they sell the last property, they pull out and often leave residents without proper street-lighting, roads or parks. The developers often just leave the worst piece of land for community space, and yet there is a law in place to protect residents.

“This is a problem, where I live in Savannah Acres, and also nearby at the Frank Hall development, which is a classic example. If elected I would act on behalf of the community to ensure that people get what they pay for.”

Other areas of concern for Mr Ebanks are the constitution, North Sound environmental protection and especially the new Immigration Law. “We need to protect Caymanians against workplace discrimination,” he said.
